How early can one start learning music?

One can start learning music as young as when they can start forming sentences in real life. Babies can recognise songs, tunes and instruments by the age of two. By the age of four, a child is ready to be introduced to formal music lessons. Introducing a child to music early in life improves their hand/eye coordination, memory power and overall sense of rhythm. Besides musical skills, they also pick up critical social skills such as team-building skills, coordination, as well as excellent communication skills.

Early starters also have the advantage of having moderate to advanced music skills by the time they are in middle school.

At IAM, we ensure that learning music does not feel like a chore for our young superheroes. The Music Champs programme at IAM is specially created for pre-schoolers and is a group-based, engaging, fun-filled, games-oriented course.

Which instrument should I learn first?

Most parents and learners who come to us would have a fair idea of their area of interest. We highly recommend that you spend some time with our mentors and subject matter experts who would be happy to assist you in confirming or suggesting the best course(s) for you.

Remember, you – the learner – are the best judge when it comes to deciding the best course for you. The general thumb rule is to choose an instrument that excites you and interests you most. Ask yourself simple questions such as the reasons for your choice, or what you want to achieve out of mastery in that subject. Even having a musician or a particular instrumentalist in the family is a fair enough reason to choose a particular subject.

Take it from us: all instruments are equally fun and equally challenging.

How long does it take to learn an instrument?

There is no right answer to this question. With regular practice, a beginner can play at a basic level of ease in a few months. We encourage students to consider a long-term commitment to learning music that helps them constantly improve their skills. This ensures that they don’t merely learn to play a few trending songs but go on and create their own masterpieces.

According to the IAM curriculum, it could take a student around three years to go from a ‘beginner’ to ‘advanced’ level.

Should I bring my own instrument to the music lessons?

All classrooms at IAM are fully equipped with the necessary musical instruments. However, students are free to bring their own instruments, should they so choose.

Is it too late for me to learn music?

No! There is no age barrier when it comes to learning music. In fact, learning music can enhance neuroplasticity in adults and senior citizens.

I already know a little about my instrument, do I have to start at the beginning?

We recommend that you spend some time with our subject matter experts at the Academy who can assist you in evaluating your current skill level in the subject of your choice. You could then decide on your next based on their advice.

What happens if I miss a class?

We suggest you do not miss any classes – especially if you are enrolled in a short-duration course. To tide over any unforeseen emergencies, we offer you up to two catch-up classes a month. Any variations to this number may be made only at the discretion of your teacher(s).

Do you have any other activities for students, such as recitals?

All our courses are activity oriented. We are equipped with a state-of-the-art jamming room where you will get to practice whatever you learn in the classroom. You will have up to four such jamming sessions a month along with your course mates and mentored by your teachers. We would also be organising recitals and performances for you – both at the Academy and at some other partner venues. These will be opportunities for you to show off your newfound skills to your parents and loved ones.

How long will I need to take lessons?

We have classes designed for hobby seekers, beginners, grade certificate aspirants, etc. These classes could range anywhere from a month to over three years. If you are unsure of your medium to long-term goals vis-à-vis learning music, you could start with our one-month, quarterly or even our half-yearly programmes. Build your dream, one month at a time.

Where are the music lessons held?

All lessons are held at the Indian Academy of Music, Sainikpuri, Hyderabad. We are located on the second floor of the “Indu Arcade” on 6th Avenue (opposite the new Solis Eye Care Hospital, and Fabindia)

Does IAM offer music classes online?

Currently, we do not provide one-on-one music classes online. Although it is comfortable learning from home, we believe that music lessons should be interactive and shared with peers. The entire experience of being in the same classroom as your peers, dedicating time towards the same goal, which is to create music and share that joy with the world. Music when created together, is far grander than a single melody.
